{"id":26,"date":"2008-07-02T16:48:25","date_gmt":"2008-07-02T15:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ridgesolutions.ie\/?p=26"},"modified":"2008-07-02T16:53:16","modified_gmt":"2008-07-02T15:53:16","slug":"evaluating-trac-for-light-weight-issue-tracking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ridgesolutions.ie\/index.php\/2008\/07\/02\/evaluating-trac-for-light-weight-issue-tracking\/","title":{"rendered":"Evaluating Trac for light-weight Issue Tracking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are\u00a0evaluating <a title=\"Trac\" href=\"http:\/\/trac.edgewall.org\/\">Trac <\/a>for a client who wants a lightweight web-based issue tracking system for one of their projects.\u00a0 <a title=\"Trac\" href=\"http:\/\/trac.edgewall.org\/\">Trac<\/a>\u00a0is an open source system.\u00a0 We are using the <a title=\"Trac\" href=\"http:\/\/trac.edgewall.org\/\">Trac<\/a> hosting service provided by <a title=\"svnrepository.com\" href=\"http:\/\/svnrepository.com\">svnrepository.com<\/a>, who as their name suggests also host subversion (which we also use).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By default <a title=\"Trac\" href=\"http:\/\/trac.edgewall.org\/\">Trac<\/a> integrates with subversion and indeed their tag line is &#8211; &#8220;Integrated SCM and project management&#8221;, which is a bit of a misnomer as\u00a0it certainly does not provide anything near a functional web interface to subversion. But, happily,\u00a0we are mostly interested in its issue tracking functionality so that&#8217;s not a problem!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Trac\" href=\"http:\/\/trac.edgewall.org\/\">Trac<\/a> manages &#8216;tickets&#8217; which represent\u00a0\u00a0bugs or feature enhancement requests etc.\u00a0Tickets can be added, edited and viewed etc.\u00a0 It also models a road-map, onto which milestones can be added.\u00a0 Tickets can be associated with milestones, product versions or components.\u00a0 It has a Wiki aspect too, but we&#8217;re not really bothered about that.\u00a0 It seems that it might do nicely as a light-weight issue tracking system, it certainly appears to take care of most of the core required bits, and it has a certain elegance and efficiency that is often missing in some\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0over engineered and complex alternatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is not without its quirks however &#8211; especially during setup, but hopefully these quirks won&#8217;t prove to be too problematic so as to rule out its use.\u00a0 Some of its admin functions still need to be accessed by command-line or by editing the Trac.ini file.\u00a0 For example although you can use the web interface to add a ticket, you have to use the admin command to\u00a0delete it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of its most problematic quirks though is\u00a0its use of Basic Authentication for login authorisation which can lead to all sorts of very confusing login\/logout situations, for example, you can&#8217;t easily logout and then login as another user&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By default the anonymous user has all sorts of permissions, so make sure to remove them by issuing an admin command like:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>trac-admin\u00a0&lt;your-path&gt; permission remove anonymous &#8216;*&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also to arrange things so that you can pick the\u00a0&#8216;owning&#8217; user\u00a0from a combo-box\u00a0on the new ticket form (rather than having to type the user name out), edit Trac.ini and in the [Ticket] section, set<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>restrict_owner = true<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, now that it&#8217;s all setup we will evaluate it on a real project and let you know how we got on!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are\u00a0evaluating Trac for a client who wants a lightweight web-based issue tracking system for one of their projects.\u00a0 Trac\u00a0is an open source system.\u00a0 We are using the Trac hosting service provided by svnrepository.com, who as their name suggests also host subversion (which we also use). \u00a0 By default Trac integrates with subversion and indeed [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-26","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tech-stuff"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 5.0.0.1 - aioseo.com -->\n\t<meta name=\"description\" content=\"We are evaluating Trac for a client who wants a lightweight web-based issue tracking system for one of their projects.
